[Case Study] What actually sell books

Writing is the least important part of selling a book.

That’s uncomfortable to hear.

But it’s also why most books fail quietly.

What matters is how you package the book.

A quick story from last week.

One of our clients, Hannah, had been stuck for a while creating her books.

Not because she wasn’t working.
But because she kept restyling her cover.

She didn’t trust her ideas.
So she copied bestsellers.

The problem?

Every version looked like something that already existed.

We told her to stop and have a more data-driven approach.

So, she analyzed:

  • Audience
  • Layouts
  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Visual cues

Anything that would make buyers stop scrolling.

Once she gathered the information, she was finally able to apply our AI Playbook to design her book cover.

The formula was simple:

Her data + our AI Design Prompt = stunning designs in minutes.

Indeed, when we reviewed them together, one cover stood out immediately.

And some small tweaks later, she had it.

She posted the win publicly:

Here’s the insight to NOT miss:

Book covers aren’t art projects anymore.

They’re decision tools.

Roughly 80% of the buying decision happens at the cover.

Before the blurb.

Before the reviews.

Before the author name.

If your cover takes weeks, you’re not being thoughtful. You’re being slow.

And slow hides feedback.

Hannah didn’t win because she has better taste.

She won because she stopped trusting her taste altogether.

So, remember:

  1. “If it takes more than a day, you’re doing it wrong.”
  2. “Your taste doesn’t matter — your reader’s does.”

That shift changes everything.

PS — If your book isn’t selling, assume the cover is guilty until proven innocent. Fix that first. Everything else comes after.
